The book

„Progress in PMR” is the first monograph in its field even at an international level.

The author has been dealing with elderly onset inflammatory rheumatic disease for almost 30 years, her scientific thesis was also written on this subject. She is a permanent member of the European and American International Workgroup, and she maintains particularly good relationship with the Mayo Clinic rheumatologists.

The recently published book provides an overarching summary of the progress in the knowledge of PMR during the last 2o-3o years. The consequent paradigm-shift is discussed, which means that PMR of the elderly has converted from a rheumatic disease with extreme inflammatory activity, muscle pain with pronounced stiffness of the shoulder/pelvic girdle, responding well to low dose GCs to a member of the giant cell arteritis (GCA) group together with vasculitides with cranial symptoms and inflammation of the large vessels.

Pathogenetic background, imaging methods are reviewed, new standardized classification and therapeautic protocols developed by international scientific societies are presented. Modern biological treatment and the treat to target concept are also introduced. Theoretical knowledge applied in clinical practice is corroborated by well-documented case reports.
The newly published book is an exceptionally well-edited and beautifully-presented work of the Medicina publishing house. It is recommended for all physicians particularly rheumatologists. Hopefully it will soon appear in English.

The foreword of the book was written by the Széchenyi Prize winner academic, professor Gyula Poor, head of the National Institute of Rheumatology and Physiotherapy. Further reviews were written by professor Emese Kiss in the Hungarian Rheumatology, journal of the Hungarian Association of Rheumatologists, and by professor Béla Gömör in the Medicus Universalis. paper of the Scientific Association of Hungarian Physicians.
